Jerry Garcia’s Rosebud and Lightning Bolt shaped his final years with the Grateful Dead. The story of those guitars is bigger than the last-show myth.

Doug Irwin built Rosebud around the sounds Garcia wanted to reach. Then Stephen Cripe, a Florida woodworker, sent an unsolicited guitar to the Dead’s office. Lightning Bolt became central to Jerry’s late playing, with Gary Brawer adapting its electronics. Rosebud returned for the final summer tour while Cripe’s guitar was being worked on.

The familiar Soldier Field story puts Tiger in Jerry’s hands at the end. Christie’s has since corrected its auction catalog: Tiger was not used at the Grateful Dead’s final show on July 9, 1995. Following Rosebud and Lightning Bolt through those last years reveals how the instruments Jerry chose became tangled up with the stories people told afterward.

After Garcia’s death, a dispute over his bequest ended with Irwin receiving Wolf and Tiger while the band retained Rosebud and the headless guitar. Tiger’s $11.56 million sale in March 2026 brought renewed attention to that legacy. Behind the famous names and auction prices are the builders, the decisions Jerry made as a player, and the question of how these instruments should be remembered.
