The Grateful Dead was never about one person. From Jerry Garcia’s songbook partnership with Robert Hunter to Bob Weir’s rhythm engine, from Pigpen’s blues-rooted frontman years through the five keyboard players who followed him, the band was a collective that kept reshaping itself through the people who passed through it. This archive covers the core members — Garcia, Weir, Phil Lesh, Pigpen, Mickey Hart, Bill Kreutzmann, Keith and Donna Godchaux, Brent Mydland, Vince Welnick, and Bruce Hornsby — as well as the lyricists, soundmen, promoters, road crew, and guest musicians who made the Dead possible. If you want to understand the band, you start with the people.
A New Voice in New Riders When Jerry Garcia stepped back from his regular duties with the Grateful Dead’s country-rock side project, New Riders of the Purple Sage, the band faced a critical question: who would fill such enormous shoes? Jerry hadn’t simply been a member—he was a founding force, the pedal steel guitarist whose…
Two Voices in the Same Bay Area Scene Janis Joplin and the Grateful Dead inhabited the same Bay Area music scene in the mid-1960s, both emerging from the broader psychedelic explosion that made San Francisco a musical capital. Both bands played the Fillmore Auditorium and the Avalon Ballroom. Both drew from blues traditions but pushed…
A Boy in Weed, California The story of Dan Healy begins in a small Northern California town of just 220 people called Weed, located on the Eel River in what’s now known as the Emerald Triangle. In this isolation, young Healy developed an early fascination with electronics and broadcast technology. A sixth-grader in the town…
The Myth of Pigpen Ron McKernan, known as Pigpen, has become folklore in Grateful Dead lore: the hard-drinking bluesman biker with a Hell’s Angels swagger who burned bright and died young at 27. The image endures—a pirate of a musician, rough around the edges, the embodiment of rock and roll excess. This myth contains elements…
The Ouija Board Consultation In late January 1966, Ken Kesey and Carolyn Mountain Girl Adams had both been arrested on marijuana charges, facing serious legal consequences. Desperate for guidance, Kesey convened a meeting in Bernal Heights and consulted a Ouija board about what to do. The board’s message was unambiguous: leave. Being a novelist prone…
The Grateful Dead walked away from Ken Kesey and the Acid Tests in 1966. From the Watts double-dosing to the Halloween Graduation, this is why they left.
Most people think the Grateful Dead started at an Acid Test. They didn’t. They started in the back of a music store — playing for Dana Morgan Jr., who they fired after just 4 shows.
In 2004, Warren Haynes played 80+ shows across The Dead and the Allman Brothers — learning 150 songs while both bands told him: don’t imitate the legend before you.
When Bob Weir joined the Grateful Dead on New Year’s Eve 1963 at Dana Morgan Music in Palo Alto, he was sixteen years old, relatively inexperienced, and stepping into a band that already had a distinctive direction. He was the youngest original member joining a group led by Jerry Garcia, and the conventional expectation might…
John Perry Barlow was a paradox wrapped in contradictions, and that’s exactly what made him essential to understanding the Grateful Dead‘s evolution. While Robert Hunter provided the mythological and literary foundation for Jerry Garcia‘s musical vision, it was Barlow who served as Bob Weir’s primary lyricist—a partnership that gave the Dead’s rhythm guitarist the poetic…
