Eras

The Grateful Dead played for thirty years, and every five of those years was a different band. The psychedelic peak of 1967 was not the classic-era band of 1972, which was not the hiatus-and-return band of 1976, which was not the arena-scale juggernaut of 1987, which was not the burned-out final years of 1994. This archive tracks the Dead chronologically — by era, by era-defining album, by era-defining tour, and by the transitions between them. The lineup changes, the sound changes, the scale changes. Understanding which Dead you’re listening to starts with knowing which era you’re in.
